One of the greatest challenges of the modern era is the climate crisis. We, in Athens Walking Tours, believe that responsibility is the key to resist this situation. This is why we promote a sustainable way of living so the waste of natural resources and pollution are minimized.
One of the ways we can achieve sustainability is by refilling our water bottles.
The vast majority of disposable water bottles become garbage. Imagine how beneficial it would be for the environment if we all started using one bottle which we would refill throughout the day.
The answer is yes. Tap water in Athens is absolutely safe to drink. This is why we do not have to buy water bottles since all buildings have direct access to drinkable water from the nearby lakes Marathon and Yliki.
For the times you will be outside during a warm day, which is most probably the case when you join our tours, the avoidance of plastic bottles is still possible. That is because there are a few places in Athens, as you can see below, where you can refill your multi-use bottle. These spots are also very close to our meeting points or constitute parts of our itineraries.
Located next to the Greek Parliament, the National Garden is an oasis in central Athens, which can offer you shade and some relaxing time.
There are also several spots where you can refill your bottle there! Find it here: https://goo.gl/maps/utYaURRySV2nv2Mb8
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most famous archaeological site in Greece. It is a place that you should certainly visit when being in Athens.
At the top of the hill you may find spots to refill your bottle! Find it here: https://goo.gl/maps/iGHydmmVQ1YVxnYg8
Odeon of Herodes Atticus
The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a stone Roman theatre that lies on the southwest slope of the Acropolis of Athens since AD 161. It was renovated in 1950 and today it is the place where many events are hosted annually.
At the entrance of the theatre, there is a water cooler machine where you can refill your bottle! Find it here: https://goo.gl/maps/2d8eQRv9bhRLSsRj6
A colossal temple dedicated to Zeus, it was completed in AD 131. Inside the archaeological site, there is a spot where you can refill your bottle! Find it here: https://goo.gl/maps/PzexttFKQ7s7NVFn7
Besides the above spots, it is also possible that when you grab a snack or a coffee, they will be glad to refill your bottle with fresh water, so do not hesitate to ask for it.
Therefore, please do not forget to bring your bottle during your next visit to Athens. After all, small steps pave the way for great accomplishments.
Act sustainably - Refill your bottle.
