Summer is by far the season for Greece because she generously yields the best of what she has to offer. Radiant sunshine and cool crystal clear azure sea. The juiciest and sweetest watermelon you’ve ever tasted and it never tastes better than it does after a mid-afternoon siesta. A warm evening spent under the stars and the full moon in August. This is the time to relax and enjoy life in a simple and uncomplicated manner. Most of your days will be hot with some cool intervals from the Meltemi winds and plenty of refreshing swims in the cleanest waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Meals will be light and fresh with plenty of sun drenched tomatoes, savory Feta cheese, meaty black olives, fresh crusty bread and what ever the days catch brought in from the fish market.
Fruit will definitely be at the top of every meals menu as the Greeks consume huge quantities of summer fruits. Fortunately, the bounty is plentiful and you will be able to choose from ripe watermelons and cantaloupes bursting with flavor, succulent cherries, apricots, juicy peaches, plums and nectarines. I usually begin my day with a generous serving of fresh Greek yogurt, preferably made from sheep’s milk, and I top it with any kind of fruit that I have on stock and add a little muesli to absorb the juices and keep it crunchy. Dinner is always a thick slice of watermelon with a piece of Feta cheese on the side.
These wonderful foods can be found everywhere in Greece, no matter where you are because they are staples of our daily diet. Fruits and vegetables can also be found in outdoor markets and in individual roadside stalls. Or better yet, take a food tour with the Athens Walking Tours through the most famous food neighborhoods of Athens and enjoy as your food expert guide takes you to the main food market where you will be able to see everything you just read about up close!
Here’s a tip, make sure you smell everything before you buy. If the fruit is fresh and of good quality, it will smell heavenly!
