On the north-eastern slopes of the Acropolis, lies the beautiful area of Thissio.
Thissio got its name from the frieze on the Temple of Hephaestus, which is located within the beautiful archaeological site of the Ancient Agora. The frieze represents the labours of the hero Theseus.

The frieze of the Temple of Hephaestus, with representations of the Labours of Theseus, gave it’s name to the most aristocratic area of Athens, the Thission.
If Monastiraki was meant to be the commercial centre of Old Athens, Thissio was always its most “elegant” neighbour.
Beautiful neoclassical buildings, cafeterias and lovely cosy taverns, line up along the spacious promenade, offering a marvellous view to the Acropolis hill.
Scattered along the way, joyful street vendors sell mainly handmade jewellery and hand crafted objects.
No wonder why, Athens Walking tours has chosen the cosiest restaurant located between the Plaka and Thissio, as the venue for its’ lovely Athens Cooking Lesson and Dinner tour!
The Restaurant is located near by the lower exit of one of the most important archaeological sites of Athens, the Ancient Agora, so, those who join our wonderful Acropolis, City tour, The Ancient Agora and Attalos museum tour, can enjoy a walk and their coffee in Thissio, prior to trying their cooking abilities at the fun and taste- filled Athens Cooking Lesson and Dinner!
During summer, Thissio is being often transformed into an open air venue for spontaneous, open-air concerts and happenings by street bands and this, combined with the fact that the area is considered as one of Athenians’ most beloved destinations within the city limits for a walk or a coffee break, makes the whole area an on-going party to celebrate the simple joys of life.
There’s plenty more to discover and to visit in Thissio: the Observatory and the St. Marina’s church, but also, the Herakleidon museum of physics, art and mathematics in Herakleidon Str., or the Islamic Art Benaki Museum or the Odeon Athenaeum, dedicated to the famous opera singer Maria Kallas; all three of them housed in beautiful neoclassical buildings.
After nightfall, Thissio will surprize the visitor with a large choice of bars and nightclubs. Worth mentioning is also the old, namesake open-air Cinema, which operates since 1935 every spring and summer and constitutes a unique experience for both Athenians and foreigners.

Thissio nightlife: An experience one should not miss out on.
